Asian Games: Hong Kong pairs struggle on opening day of beach volleyball

Hong Kong women’s beach volleyball pair To Wing-tung and Wong Man-ching made a bright start but then faded away to lose 2-1 in their opening group match on Tuesday.

Playing at the Ningbo Banbianshan Beach Volleyball Centre, To and Wong, who have been together for 18 months, were the first Hongkongers to make an appearance at the Asian Games.

Facing Khylem Harl Progella and Grydelle Joanice Matibag of the Philippines, To and Wong took the first set 21-17.

The local pair fought hard in the second before going down 23-21, and the decider was a far simpler affair, with the Philippines team coming away with a 15-13 win.

To and Wong will face Thailand’s Worapeerachaya Kongphopsarutawadee and Taravadee Naraphornrapat at noon on Wednesday.

Fellow Hongkongers Lo Wai-yan and Tuen Ting-chi also made a losing start to their Games, going down 2-0 to Macau duo Leong On-leng and Law Weng-Sam, who took 40 minutes to win 21-16, 21-15.

In the men’s event, the city’s only pair Lam Ki-fung and Wong Pui-lam lost 21-9, 21-14 to Japan’s Takumi Takahashi and Yuya Ageba in 30 minutes.

The pair will be in action again on Thursday, taking on Thailand’s Poravid Taovato and Pithak Tipjan.
