One of the world's top chocolatiers was in town briefly on Wednesday. Frenchman Jean-Paul Hevin was here to open his first shop, in Harbour City. Knowing Hevin once created some clothes made of chocolate, local organisers planned a kooky fashion show - mostly of chocolate necklaces - attended by numerous socialites with nothing better to do and who didn't mind some free sweets.
Furthermore, a range of decorative chocolate items - vases, cigars, stiletto-heeled shoes and a cocoa Eiffel Tower - was on display. Yes, it's all a bit cheesy but Hevin's confections win awards. And he is huge in Japan - so popular that the Paris native has become fluent in Japanese. But his English is minimal at best, which made conversing with him quite difficult without a translator. 'I don't know why I am so popular in Japan. It just happened that way,' he said. 'The chocolate is the same in France or Japan or Hong Kong. I don't do anything different to it [to cater to local tastes].'
